The Energy of Gamma-Ray Bursts

چکیده

The energy of a Gamma-Ray Burst is one of the most interesting factors that can help determining the origin of these mysterious explosions. After the discovery that GRBs are cosmological it was thought, for a while that they are standard candles releasing ∼ 1051ergs. Redshift measurements that followed the discovery of GRB afterglow revealed that GRBs are (i) further than what was initially believed and (ii) have a very wide luminosity function. Some bursts revealed an enormous energy release with a record estimate of 1.4 × 1054ergs for GRB990123. The energy budget was stretched even further when it was suggested that the conversion efficiency of producing gamma-rays is low. The realization that GRBs are beamed changed this perspective and brought the energy budget of GRBs down back to a ”modest” ∼ 5× 1050ergs. I discuss here various estimates showing that GRB energy is narrowly distributed and discuss the implications of this conclusion to GRB models.

The Role of the BATSE Instrument Response in Creating the GRB E-Peak Distribution

All gamma-ray bursts are observed to have approximately the same characteristic gamma-ray energy. We show in this article that for bursts in the BATSE data set, this property as measured by the E-peak value is not an instrumental effect, but a physical property of gamma-ray bursts. 1. The Characteristic Photon Energy of Bursts The prompt emission of gamma-ray bursts is observed predominately at...

“No High Energy Emission” GRB Class Is Attributable to Brightness Bias

The inhomogeneous brightness distribution of BATSE detected gamma-ray bursts has been considered strong evidence for their cosmological origin. However, subclasses of gamma-ray bursts have been shown to have significantly more homogeneous brightness distributions. Pendleton et al. (1997) have found such a result for gamma-ray bursts with no detectable emission at energies >300 keV. Accordingly,...

Gamma Ray Bursts as seen by a Giant Air Shower Array

The potentiality of a Giant Shower Array to low energy gamma rays from gamma ray bursts is discussed. Effective areas are calculated for different scenarios and the results are encouraging. If gamma ray bursts have a spectrum which continues in the high energy gamma ray region, the Pierre Auger Observatory will be able to detect it.

Very high-energy gamma rays from gamma-ray bursts.

Very high-energy (VHE) gamma-ray astronomy has undergone a transformation in the last few years, with telescopes of unprecedented sensitivity having greatly expanded the source catalogue. Such progress makes the detection of a gamma-ray burst at the highest energies much more likely than previously. This paper describes the facilities currently operating and their chances for detecting gamma-ra...

Gamma-Ray Bursts: Jets and Energetics

The relativistic outflows from gamma-ray bursts are now thought to be narrowly collimated into jets. After correcting for this jet geometry there is a remarkable constancy of both the energy radiated by the burst and the kinetic energy carried by the outflow. Gamma-ray bursts are still the most luminous explosions in the Universe, but they release energies that are comparable to supernovae. The...

MHD waves in the early universe and genesis of cosmic gamma ray bursts

It is conjectured that energy sources of the gamma ray bursts are similar to energy sources which trigger solar and stellar transient activity phenomena like flares, plasma accelerated flows in the flux tubes and, dissipation of energy and acceleration of particles by the MHD waves. Phenomenologically we examine in detail the following energy sources which may trigger gamma ray bursts : (i) cos...
